Gilles Gerard (Luxlait): Celebrates 130 Years of Innovation

Marking its 130th anniversary, Luxlait reinforces its commitment to quality, sustainability, and expansion, underpinned by significant new investments and product innovations.

How does Luxlait maintain uncompromised quality across its large-scale operations?

Luxlait’s commitment to excellence is evident from milk collection to final product. Over 25,000 cows contribute to an annual yield exceeding 180 million liters of milk, processed daily in half-million-liter quantities. Rigorous quality measures uphold Luxlait’s reputation, with milk remaining in silos for under 24 hours to preserve freshness. Daily product analyses surpass 2,000 checks to ensure impeccable standards, while advanced traceability systems link each product to its specific source, a unique practice among dairy processors. Luxlait’s certifications—including IFS Food at the superior level, halal, organic, and the Royal Supplier label—attest to its adherence to ethical standards. Only 100% Luxembourg milk goes into Luxlait products, cementing a bond with local suppliers and ensuring consistency. By redistributing revenues back to its farmer members, Luxlait not only supports the local economy but also strengthens Luxembourg’s agricultural sector, fostering long-term community resilience and reinforcing Luxembourgish dairy’s reputation abroad.

What sustainable practices underscore Luxlait’s commitment to environmental responsibility?
Sustainability is woven into every aspect of Luxlait’s operations. The company’s central location in Luxembourg allows efficient milk collection, reducing its carbon footprint to a remarkable 0.004 km per liter—one of the lowest in Europe. At its modern Roost-Bissen site, a €160 million investment completed in 2011 and followed by another €50 million in upgrades has equipped Luxlait with one of the most advanced dairy processing facilities worldwide. Here, Luxlait implements eco-friendly practices, including packaging made from FSC-certified forests, reduced plastic through cardboard containers, and plant-based caps. Over 60 different types of waste are sorted, further reducing environmental impact. A commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050 underscores Luxlait’s sustainable growth ambitions, while a large rooftop solar installation and dedicated water treatment plant keep environmental standards high. These measures also serve Luxembourg’s local economy by prioritizing ethical practices and job security for over 700 employees, including 400 production workers who ensure that Luxlait’s growth remains responsible and impactful.

“Luxlait’s economic growth is rooted in environmental protection and fair social development, aiming for carbon neutrality before 2050.”

How does Luxlait’s future vision shape its approach to product innovation and market expansion?
Luxlait’s growth strategy centers on ambitious plans to innovate and broaden its product range, fueled by continuous investment in advanced technology and sustainable practices. The company’s upcoming projects include a modern packaging line, an enlarged aseptic tank for UHT products, and the expansion of storage facilities to accommodate over 15,000 euro-pallets, streamlining distribution and enhancing production capacity. These investments, exceeding €15 million, allow Luxlait to pursue new opportunities both locally and internationally. For example, Luxlait aims to bring mozzarella, a product it previously manufactured and still holds expertise in, back into its offerings to become a market leader in this category. The company’s forward-thinking approach also sees Luxlait entering the plant-based sector in collaboration with a leading local partner, a pioneering move for Luxembourg. Luxlait’s product portfolio, which now includes over 480 items and 135 unique recipes, has expanded recently with items like Skyr in varied flavors, catering to a broader consumer base. With 70% of products now exported across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, Luxlait’s market reach grows, supported by partnerships with other Luxembourgish companies, which showcase Luxembourg’s dairy expertise and agricultural quality to the world.
