Charlotte Pedersen (Pegasus Consilium Sarl): from aviation to professional services

She started her career as Air Force Officer and Helicopter Search & Rescue pilot. Later she became COO of Luxaviation. We interviewed the multi-talented Charlotte Pedersen. Enjoy the ride!

Can you tell your story in a few words?

Yes. I am a businesswoman with more than 30 years of experience and strong existing network in the Transportation (Aviation, Yachting, Automobile and Rail), Luxury Travel, High-End Hospitality and Leisure sectors. I grew up in the countryside on a small Danish Island called Bornholm. I initially started my career as Air Force Officer and Helicopter Search & Rescue pilot, graduating in the US Navy on the Commodore’s List with Distinction. After 17 years of military services, I joined the Civil Aviation Authority in Luxembourg as Flight Operations Inspector. During this period, I also flew medical helicopter services in Northern France (Same helicopters as LAR) I joined Luxaviation in 2012 and was appointed Chief Operating Officer of the Group in 2014 before becoming the President of Helicopter Services and Chief Executive Officer of Luxaviation Helicopters. I hold an MBA with Honors and I am a certified INSEAD International Director as well as ILA certified Director. Today I run my own advisory company called Pegasus Consilium SarL (Specialized in the areas of Corporate Strategy, Branding, Management, Leadership, Sustainability, Diversity and Inclusion) plus I am a professional Board of Director for several companies.

Change management, in my opinion, is all about understanding people and recognizing how to communicate efficiently with everyone, respecting different cultures, different geographies and different backgrounds and experiences.

Which competencies from helicopter flying did you apply in your business career?

I have applied several of my aviation competencies to my business career- to mention a few: Situational Awareness, Risk Management, Decision-making Under Pressure, Communication and Teamwork, Adaptability and Flexibility, Attention to Detail and Precision, Resilience and Stress Management. While the contexts of helicopter flying and business may differ, many of the skills and competencies developed in aviation can be transferred to the business environment. By leveraging these competencies, business professionals can enhance their decision-making, communication, adaptability, and risk management skills, ultimately leading to improved performance and success.

From helicopter pilot to Group Financial Coordinator and CEO of a multinational, what have your learnt about change management?

Change management, in my opinion, is all about understanding people and recognizing how to communicate efficiently with everyone, respecting different cultures, different geographies and different backgrounds and experiences. Being educated as an Air force officer is also an education in crisis management, people management, resilience and stress management plus effective communication, add to this a military pilot training which is all about the ability to analyze information, consider alternatives, and make sound decisions under pressure plus a practical experience in developing and integrating a multinational company with more than 50 individual companies (In the aviation industry, where the only constant factor is change..), I feel that I have learnt a lot about change and how to manage it :-)). Overall, I think that change management skills are essential for effectively navigating and leading through change, fostering employee engagement, minimizing disruptions, and increasing the success rate of change initiatives. They are crucial in today’s dynamic business environment to ensure long-term growth and sustainability.

Which keys allowed Luxaviation to become an international champion? How could other companies replicate this success in other fields?

There are many keys which led to the success of Luxaviation, some of them are: Diversity (Experience from other business sectors plus diverse teams), connecting dots and out-of-the-box thinking, the right timing, daring to think big plus a thorough understanding of the current business sector incl regulations, and finally a positive and inspiring work environment filled with engaged and motivated employees.

If you could improve 3 things in Luxembourg, what would they be?

Lower the prices of housing (So the young generation can afford to buy property), develop more educational options for the youth (So they stay in Luxembourg) and become frontrunners in the sustainability area on a global level!
