Clémence Boisanté (Ceysson & Bénétière): Art Beyond Borders

Clémence Boisanté, director of the Luxembourg space at Ceysson & Bénétière, discusses the gallery’s international expansion and its strategic presence in Luxembourg.

Can you present your gallery in few words? 

Ceysson & Bénétière was founded in 2004 by Loïc Bénétière, François and Bernard Ceysson. Initially established in Saint-Étienne, the gallery has gradually developed a strong international network, with spaces in Luxembourg-including a monumental venue in Wandhaff-Paris, Geneva, New York, Lyon, and Panéry. A new 320 m2 gallery has just opened in Tokyo in May 2025. The gallery is particularly recognized for its long-standing commitment to the Supports/Surfaces movement-especially Claude Viallat-and for its regular participation in major international art fairs such as FIAC (now Art Basel Paris), Frieze (New York & London), Art Basel (Miami & Basel), and TEFAF Maastricht. It also supports emerging contemporary art through artist residencies in La Chaulme and has published over forty monographic books since 2006.

How are you reaching your clients around the world?

We connect with our collectors around the world by combining on-site presence, personalized exchanges, and a sensitive sharing of our artists’ work. With galleries located in Paris, New York, Tokyo, Geneva, Luxembourg, and in more unique settings like Panéry and La Chaulme, we build relationships across continents while nurturing a sense of closeness. Major international fairs-Art Basel, Frieze, TEFAF-offer opportunities for meetings, dialogue, and discovery. Yet beyond these key events, we value maintaining direct, human, and lasting relationships with our collectors through private visits, exhibition previews, conversations about the artworks, and attentive support. Digital tools complement this relationship: our website, newsletters, and social media allow us to share artworks, tell their stories, and stay connected wherever we are. At Ceysson & Bénétière, we view the relationship between gallery, artists, and collectors as a mutual commitment, based on listening, guidance, loyalty, and high standards.

How important is Luxembourg at Galerie Ceysson & Bénétière?

Luxembourg holds a special place within Galerie Ceysson & Bénétière, as it marked our first international expansion. This choice was both heartfelt and strategic. Bernard Ceysson and Arlette Klein-two key and deeply influential figures in the gallery’s history-played a decisive role in the early development of the Mudam, and thus possess a profound understanding of the territory, its institutions, cultural stakeholders, and strategic challenges. The Grand Duchy’s international atmosphere and geographic location make it an ideal base for collectors across Europe and beyond. Since 2015, following ten years in the historic Ville Haute and the opening of our monumental space in Wandhaff, Luxembourg has become a central hub for our activities. Unlike France, Luxembourg does not, to our knowledge, offer particularly favorable legal provisions regarding cultural patronage or the acquisition of artworks. However, the country’s strong economic health and overall advantageous fiscal environment remain key assets for the art market. Despite the absence of incentivizing measures, Luxembourgish collectors show remarkable commitment to supporting and sustaining the art scene of the country and the greater region. Thanks to this support and the strong interest shown by the Luxembourgish public, we have been able to present spectacular exhibitions by Bernar Venet, Claude Viallat, and Nam Tchun-Mo across the 1,400 m2 of the gallery.
