Sarah Meyers and Laura Fügmann co-founded the studio Meyers & Fügmann, based in Luxembourg and Berlin. Their textile and product design blends craft, material research, and sustainable practice, creating work that emphasizes transformation, process and local production.
Formative Training and Collaborative Beginnings
Sarah Meyers was born in Luxembourg in 1987, and Laura Fügmann in Hannover the same year. They first connected while studying textile and surface design at the Weissensee Art School in Berlin. After graduating, both completed a Master’s in “Material Utopias” at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam, exploring materials like ceramics, glass, plastic, wood, and metal. During and after their studies, they collaborated with Jongeriuslab in Berlin, gaining experience in textile development, three‑dimensional weaving, and material exploration. Their complementary skills—Sarah’s curiosity and Laura’s precision—formed the foundation for Meyers & Fügmann, officially established in 2015, rooted in a shared commitment to craft and experimentation.
Design Philosophy and Studio Practice
Meyers & Fügmann operate between Berlin and Luxembourg, developing a design approach grounded in material‑led thinking. Their practice spans textile and product design, hands‑on research, color exploration, exhibition design, consultancy, and workshops in natural dyeing and color theory. Central to their philosophy is honoring the inherent qualities of materials and embedding traces of making into their creations. They favor slow consumerism and seek to make the production process—including the material’s journey and social impact—visible and meaningful. Their work emphasizes sustainability, material authenticity, and the dialogue between craft and industry, turning design into a deliberate reflection on resource use and cultural provenance.
“Driven by a mutual desire to make things, the collaboration grew out of a dialogue between Laura’s unrelenting patience and an eye for detail, and Sarah’s boundless curiosity and hunger for new ideas.”
Recognition and Exhibition Highlights
Their design philosophy has been recognized with the Luxembourg Design Award in 2017 for their textile project “Couleurs‑sur‑Sûre,” created using locally sourced wool dyed with regional plants and woven in collaboration with a local factory. They have exhibited widely—from Luxembourg’s Design City to the Grand Palais in Paris, Berlin Design Week, Dutch Design Week, Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin, and Ornamenta 2024. Their creations are sold internationally in boutiques across Berlin, Eindhoven, Paris, Luxembourg, and online. Through both awards and exhibitions, Meyers & Fügmann continue to share their material‑centric, process‑oriented approach with a growing global audience.
