Design and Construction
Designed by French engineer Paul Séjourné and Luxembourgish engineer Albert Rodange, Pont Adolphe features a central double arch spanning 84.65 meters, which was the world’s largest stone arch at its completion. The bridge’s total length is 153 meters, with a height of 42 meters above the valley, connecting Boulevard Royal in Ville Haute to Avenue de la Liberté in the Gare district. The structure comprises twin parallel arches, each supporting smaller arches, creating an open-spandrel design that reduced material usage while maintaining structural integrity.
Renovations and Modern Adaptations
Over its century-long existence, Pont Adolphe has undergone several renovations to address structural wear and adapt to modern transportation needs. Notably, between 2014 and 2017, a comprehensive rehabilitation project was undertaken.This included widening the bridge to 18.70 meters to accommodate tram lines and reinforcing the arches with contemporary materials. Additionally, a 154-meter-long suspended lower deck was introduced beneath the main deck, providing a dedicated bidirectional bicycle path and pedestrian walkway, seamlessly integrating modern functionality while preserving historical aesthetics.
