CinEast is a film festival dedicated to works from Central and Eastern Europe. It has been running since 2008 and takes place every year in October in Luxembourg. The 2025 edition will mark the 18th occurrence of this cultural event.
CinEast: A Cultural Bridge through Cinema
CinEast was founded in October 2008 to bring contemporary films from Central and Eastern Europe to Luxembourg audiences, building upon prior efforts such as Polish Film Days. Over the years, the festival expanded in both scope and participation, evolving from a modest showcase of a few countries to a comprehensive celebration of regional cinema. It broadened its selection to include fiction, documentary, animation, and short films across numerous venues. This expansion included the introduction of an official competition with awards such as the Grand Prix, Critics’ Prize, and Young Talents Award. The festival’s audience grew rapidly, setting attendance records over the years—reaching over 11,000 in 2019—reflecting its increasing cultural prominence.
The 2025 Edition
The 18th CinEast festival will be held from 10 to 26 October 2025, returning in full force after recent years marked by hybrid adaptations. This edition will offer more than 60 feature films and around 40 short films drawn from a wide range of Central and Eastern European nations—including fiction, animation, and documentary formats. Screenings and events will take place at major venues such as Cinémathèque, Ciné Utopia, Neimënster, and Kinepolis Kirchberg, alongside additional venues throughout Luxembourg. The program promises immersive experiences beyond the cinema, including concerts, exhibitions, discussions, culinary events, and “CinEast presents” special screenings, designed to deepen the festival’s cultural resonance and complement its competitive offerings.
“We are proud of the fact that we have managed to bring many renowned filmmakers, actors and also music bands to Luxembourg audiences.”
Influence and Impact
CinEast has become a key cultural event in Luxembourg, drawing approximately 10,000 visitors annually. It fosters multicultural dialogue by showcasing diverse films and integrating complementary events—music performances, exhibitions, panel discussions, and culinary evenings—that broaden the festival’s appeal. The competition framework encourages discovery: through the International Jury, Press Jury, Young Talents segment, and multiple Audience Awards, the festival elevates emerging voices and strengthens regional film visibility. Festival representatives have underscored their pride in this mission.
