"The real magic happens when they start meeting people from outside their community."
Sportunity started over thirteen years ago with a very simple idea: sport is a great context to bring people together for a good cause. It wasn't created as a refugee support organisation, but quite quickly we saw where the need was most pressing: hundreds of people arriving in Luxembourg seeking protection, living in reception structures, with no access to sport at all. Yes, they had their basic needs covered, shelter and food. But the joy of movement and socialising are basic human needs too. So we set up free sports programmes for refugees, directly in the shelters and in central locations, across disciplines and age groups: a safe space anyone can join, whatever their fitness level, to spend some energy, get healthier, meet friends, break the routine, and leave their worries behind, if only for a while. That idea is still at the core of what we do today, with weekly trainings open to everyone: football for adults and kids, pilates, karate, with yoga in the park and biking joining the mix in summer. Through these trainings, refugees build their first social circle and a healthy routine. Yet you don't really help someone integrate by keeping them among themselves. The real magic happens when they start meeting people from outside their community.
Every year, over 200 refugees are involved in Sportunity's programmes, meaning that since our foundation, we have accompanied thousands of people through some of the most critical and disorienting moments of their time in Luxembourg. Sport gave them something concrete to hold on to when very little else was stable. And the real joy for us is seeing them move on: a job, a local sports club, friendships outside the shelter. Much of that depends on connections with the local community, so we continuously create opportunities for refugees and locals to meet through sport and active leisure. With companies, we set up moments where employees and our participants play together and meet as equals: teammates in a friendly football match, fellow runners in a race. Sport removes the barriers, and afterwards, over a drink, the real thing happens: conversations about how a Luxembourg workplace works, practical advice, a name to contact. These small connections open real horizons for people who often don't know where to look or how to make the first step. There's enormous untapped potential here: motivated people with refugee backgrounds remain largely invisible to the employers who would benefit from finding them. That gap costs both sides.
We want to go deeper: reach more people, build stronger bridges between newcomers and local organisations, and help more people find their place in Luxembourg. Getting involved is easy. Share a word about us in your company and let's organise an inclusive sport-themed activity that fits your team. Those who've tried it tell us it's among the most memorable and meaningful things their teams have done together. Or join one of our cultural hikes and discover a unique Luxembourg tradition, alongside people who may really benefit from your experience, your guidance, or simply your friendly company for a day. In addition, we always welcome coaches and volunteers across our activities. And financial support is what keeps all of it going. We run lean, so contributions translate almost immediately into more trainings and more support for more people. It all starts at sportunity.org.
