Olivier Debeugny (Lingua Custodia): Read this if you don’t know yet what NLP is about!

When I launched Lingua Custodia 10 years ago, I had no idea the problem I wanted tackle for the Financial industry was going to trigger the set up of an expert team in Natural Language Processing (NLP) for Finance.

Can you present your company in a few words?

Lingua Custodia is an expert in Natural Language Processing (NLP) for Finance. This skill has been applied since our launch to one of the hardest task to perform: the automation of technical financial translation. We are now very well known as the most qualitative provider of machine translation solutions for the financial industry with specific translation engine ranges adapted to the variety of our client base : investment managers, custodians and fund admins, broker, Corporate investment banks, private banks and wealth managers etc… Leveraging the state-of-the-art NLP level reached by the teams, we are now progressively developing an extensive range of applications beyond machine translation to help financial institutions facing key challenges where the automatic handling of text data can help: ESG Data incorporation/Sustainability reporting, Regulatory on-going evolutions, market analysis, KYC… We produce very high quality output for our clients thanks to highly domain-focused machine learning algorithms. We are collaborating with our clients to develop new tools leveraging our NLP expertise such as automatic audio file transcription, financial table extraction out of unstructured data, sophisticated linguistic indicator out of big data, text summarization, etc.. Our technology is regularly awarded and recognised by both NLP research world and clients and we publish several research papers every year. But behind Tech, our greatest assets are, and will always be, Lingua Custodia talents

“Tech has been instrumental to help financial institutions combining massive amounts of data while saving time and improving added value. Language is the remaining field for improvement to move to the next level.”

How can Luxembourg’s ecosystem help you grow?

We believe that the Luxembourg fintech ecosystem is unique in the world, Finance has been one of the main priority sector of the Luxembourg government for many years and this has produced very tangible results. All financial institutions in the world have a branch in Luxembourg and many non-European banks use Luxembourg as their launchpad for Europe. This generates many business opportunities for Fintech companies like us who are working with major financial players or targeting them as clients. There is no dispersion of efforts and the fintech ecosystem with its various stakeholders all work, network and co-work supporting each over. This is the reason why we decided three years ago to launch our first international operations in Luxembourg and implanted the entire sales team there. It proved to be much easier to develop our international business from Luxembourg than from our French office.

Can you describe a recent successful project that lingua custodia led?

I am tempted to focus on our new NLP platform which is now in its prelaunch beta version after a 2 year development or the API integration project some of our clients have engaged with us to fully automate the translation process of their regulatory reporting. However, I am a strong believer of partnership and collaboration within the ecosystem so I would like to highlight the integration of our technology within the plat – form of other Fintech companies and vice versa. Happy clients are those who can use all the most specialized and customized tools for their activities on a single platform, hence the importance of integration for tech solutions. Lingua Custodia NLP expertise is therefore fully integrated with the tech of other providers to financial institutions such as Sequantis, CSS Compliance (now Confluence) or more recently Jump Technology. As the need for NLP grows tremendously, we are looking forward to further integrating our technology with various system and tools to add this new semantic analysis step to many investment decision and production workflows in the financial industry.
